2022 was an amazing year of transition. Just prior to my 2021 show, Non Sequitur, I read an interesting article about artist Jason Allen in the New York Times. Jason had won a $300 prize at a local art fair in Colorado with a picture generated by AI. This news was not received very kindly by the broader art community, and people called for him to return the money, which he did not (good for him!). That got me curious about using AI.
Being an early adopter myself, I launched into AI with gusto. My technique was to use a text prompt along with one of my own images for the AI algorithm to conjure with, and then to rework the result using Photoshop. Hundreds of really interesting images materialized. I used many of them to create sheets of artistamps. I also began planning my first AI book, CT Chew on AI.
The images seemed miraculous and delicious at the time. They were wonky and abstract, but also fresh and intriguing.
I hope you enjoy the slide show below featuring a number of my favorite pieces from 2022. Hint: click on the image to make the background disappear.
